Father Raniero Cantalamessa offers pastoral advice and leads the reader through passages of Scripture and the Fathers of the Church to remind us of the incalculable power of the Spirit available to us. This spiritual "intoxication" is an infilling—through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and the action of God—that purifies us of sin, renews the heart and enlightens the mind. As St. Augustine said of the Spirit, "He found you empty and he filled you…I like this kind of intoxication. The Spirit of God is both drink and light." Stock #: T16713

Incredible, understandable insight

I have read many books about the power of the Holy Spirit, but Raniero Cantalamessa's descriptions are profound. Connecting personal experiences of the Holy Spirit to Scripture, he provides a profound teaching about the Holy Spirit that goes far beyond what we as Catholics are hearing in our homilies. The deeper we delve into our spiritual lives, the greater our longing is to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Many of our Pentecostal brothers and sisters speak of such experiences and it is important that we as Catholics first believe that the Holy Spirit still manifests himself in the way that he did when he was first sent to the Apostles, and secondly, that the Holy Spirit desires to strengthen and inspire us to live lives uncommon in their holiness. If you are longing to be filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit, this book provides a wonderful means to getting there.

FR. RANIERO CANTALAMESSA, O.F.M. Cap., has been the papal preacher to Pope John Paul II’s pontifical household since 1980. He is a former professor of history of early Christianity, head of the department of religious studies at the Catholic University in Milan, member of the International Theological Commission and author of numerous books, including Loving the Church (Servant Books). He lives in Rome.
