An outstanding look at the early church . The community that was formed and the teachings from the Apostles and from Paul
I am interested in a chronical development of church doctrine from an objective historical view. This book gives interesting points, but the slant is toward what emerged, with the rest as heresy. By focusing upon particular individuals it is difficult to follow the overall chronology. I would be more interested in a chronological development of concepts from a historical view. This is not this book, but I would be happy to see such produced.
I have a background in Church history but had always felt the era of the Fathers was a major gap in my learning. I devoured this book! Marcellino D'Ambrosio is a master story teller. He weaves the history and theology of this seminal era in the Church's history in such a compelling and convincing narrative that I am determined to make my way through the suggested reading at the back of the book. I hope Dr D'Ambrosio writes more! I will definitely read it!
This was just enough on each Father of the Church for someone just learning about them.
I liked this so much I bought another copy to send to a friend. I had read the Penguin book on the early church and, while it was good, it gave me more of the wrangles between the church fathers rather than what they themselves were like. This book captures more of the character of these early scholars and the intensity of the debates they undertook. Such as the battle over including the Holy Spirit in the Credo. Yes, they disagreed and fought over every detail. As they should -- this was the Church in its formation. It was their job to clarify and to resolve. In seeing them one by one, as this book presents them, you can see the differences of background, outlook, skill, passion and how it all contributed to the Church that today we revere and love. A wonderful history.
