Excellent catecetical resource.

"Catholic and Christian" by Alan Schreck is subtitled "An Explanation of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs." I have been a priest for over 60 years, so I have often been asked, by Catholics and non-Catholics alike, to explain the meaning (and the reasons behind) various teachings and beliefs held by Roman Catholics. Some common examples: Why must you confess your sins to a priest rather than directly to God? How can Jesus be present in that small piece of bread and sip of wine? Why can't women be priests and bishops? Where do you find the teaching on Purgatory in the Bible? All excellent questions posed by thoughtful people.

The present book is the 20th anniversary revised edition of the book by the same author. A glance at the Table of Contents reveals the topics Father Schreck addresses: where Catholic beliefs come from; how Catholics under-stand the Church; leadership (including the role of the pope and bishops); the Mass and the sacraments; Mary and the saints; and our final destiny.

The author maintains a positive outlook on the Catholic Church; but he does not omit or excuse its flaws and imperfections. His writing style is clear and easy to understand. I believe this book can be very helpful both to practicing Catholics as well as to those who have little knowledge or experience of the Catholic Church. For Catholics it will be an excellent summary of the Church's teachings and the reasons behind them; for non-Catholics it can serve as a fine introduction to Catholicism. Fr. Martin Pable, OFM, Capuchin
