When the Church Was Young: Voices of the Early Fathers

If the word trinity isn’t in Scripture, why is it such an important part of our faith? And if the Bible can be interpreted in many ways, how do we know what to make of it? And who decided what should be in the Bible anyway? The Church Fathers provide the answers. These brilliant, embattled, and sometimes eccentric men defined the biblical canon, hammered out the Creed, and gave us our understanding of sacraments and salvation. It is they who preserved for us the rich legacy of the early Church. Stock #: B36777

When the Church Was Young: Voices of the Early Fathers

When the Church Was Young

An outstanding look at the early church . The community that was formed and the teachings from the Apostles and from Paul

A tilted summary

I am interested in a chronical development of church doctrine from an objective historical view. This book gives interesting points, but the slant is toward what emerged, with the rest as heresy. By focusing upon particular individuals it is difficult to follow the overall chronology. I would be more interested in a chronological development of concepts from a historical view. This is not this book, but I would be happy to see such produced.

Best intro to the Fathers of the Church

I have a background in Church history but had always felt the era of the Fathers was a major gap in my learning. I devoured this book! Marcellino D'Ambrosio is a master story teller. He weaves the history and theology of this seminal era in the Church's history in such a compelling and convincing narrative that I am determined to make my way through the suggested reading at the back of the book. I hope Dr D'Ambrosio writes more! I will definitely read it!

This was just enough on each Father of the Church for someone just learning about them.

Marcellino D’Ambrosio is a world-renowned commentator on religious issues. With a Ph.D. in theology (under Cardinal Avery Dulles), nine years of university teaching, and hundreds of published articles, Marcellino has a wealth of knowledge and knows how to make it accessible for a wide variety of audiences. As “Dr. Italy,” D’Ambrosio has a popular website, Facebook page, and Twitter feed and appears weekly on a variety of Catholic TV and radio networks. He is the coauthor of the million-copy bestseller The Guide to the Passion.
