The Franciscan Saints
Reading Robert Ellsberg’s profiles of holy men and women is like throwing open a window in a stuffy old church and taking in great gulps of fresh air. Henri Nouwen has described his writing as “evocative without being pious.” He broadens the traditional vision of sanctity and calls modern readers of all stripes to claim their potential for moral and spiritual growth, courage and action. By choosing relevant models and contemporary heroes, he makes holiness accessible and attractive to ordinary people.
These 101 spiritual trailblazers span the centuries from Francis and Clare to Solanus Casey and Mychal Judge, with representatives from every walk of life and corner of the world.
Each entry features the essential biographical facts and adds the insight and depth only Ellsberg can provide. The author’s sharp eye for signs and stories of holiness in the gritty, messy real world informs his selections, making his work unique. Obscure lay peasants, married activists, and controversial social reformers take pride of place alongside better-known theologians, founders, and canonized saints.

The Franciscan Saints
“Blessed Among Us” and The Franciscan Saints!!What a Pair of Books someone like me loves reading and learning from. Don’t let anyone kid you-- Hagiography has NOT died!! It’s alive and “kicking” as found also in J. Weigel (OFM), L. Foley,OFM and Diane Houdek (OFS) “Live Like Francis” Their last chapter says it all: Let Us Begin Again, and Again, and Again… Hagiography has just been rejuvenated and I’m one happy fella to follow along and join the crowd!!! John Klas, OFS, St. Paschal Baylon Fraternity, Wind Lake WI. A long-time hagiography fan and St Francis long-time fan!!
Excellent service and delivery. Now I am looking forward to read the books. - Thank you. More orders will follow.
As a convert and a relatively newly professed secular Franciscan I still have a lot to learn about Franciscan spirituality. This book will add to my knowledge and hopefully help making me grow in holiness.
The Franciscan Saints by Robert Ellsberg provides readers with a panoramic view of how the Franciscan charism has been embodied through the centuries in a myriad of ways through these sisters and brothers. Though Franciscans have argued about poverty for centuries the witness of the lives of these saints give strong and clear testimony to the fact that poverty holds pride of place of importance in living the charism. This book is indeed inspirational, but it challenges all of us to strive for integrity in how we respond to God's call to grow in holiness through a commitment to living the Gospel in the spirit of Francis, Clare and all those who have gone before us with our ancestors in Franciscan life.
I love my book. I live the short stories and quotes. My curiosity is being quenched.
